What should you know about rash around eye?

Eye creams, makeup, cleansers, hair products, nail products, and airborne irritants can cause Contact Dermatitis on eyelid skin. Atopic Dermatitis may cause dry, itchy scaling. Psoriasis can produce defined scaly plaques elsewhere as well. Infection is more concerning when there is warmth, tenderness, crusting, fever, or swelling that spreads. The skin around the eye is delicate, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Stop new or fragranced products near the eye and rinse gently with clean lukewarm water. Do not rub, scratch, use essential oils, or put non-prescribed creams into the eye. Keep contact lenses and eye makeup out while the area is irritated. Wash hands before touching the face, and bring product names and photographs to an appointment if the rash continues.

Seek urgent care for vision change, severe eye pain, pain with eye movement, marked swelling that closes the eye, fever, or swelling spreading around the eye. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Arrange a prompt review for pus, worsening tenderness, or a rash that does not settle after removing a suspected irritant.
