What should you know about rash antibiotic reaction?

Tell the prescriber when the antibiotic started, when the rash appeared, and whether it changed after a dose. A widespread itchy eruption can be a medicine reaction; hives, facial swelling, breathing symptoms, blistering, or peeling are more concerning patterns. Some rashes reflect the infection being treated rather than the antibiotic. A previous reaction to the same or a related medicine is useful information, but it does not replace assessment of this episode.

Contact the prescribing clinician or pharmacist promptly and provide the medicine name, dose instructions, start date, other medicines, and a clear photograph. Do not take another dose until you have received individualized advice if the rash is new or worsening; urgent symptoms take priority. Do not share the antibiotic, restart an old prescription, or label yourself allergic without a documented clinical review. Keep the packaging available.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Seek same-day medical care for fever with a rapidly spreading rash, significant skin pain, facial swelling, or purple spots that do not fade when pressed. A mild stable rash still warrants prompt advice so the infection remains treated safely.
