What should you know about rash after sunburn?

Sunburn damages the outer skin and triggers inflammation, so redness, warmth, tenderness, itch, peeling, and small blisters may appear as the injury evolves. Peeling can leave the surface dry and sensitive. A rash outside the sun-exposed area, marked swelling, pus, or increasing pain is less typical of straightforward healing and may indicate another problem or infection. Do not peel loose skin or break blisters. A recurrence after light exposure, especially after a new medicine or product, should be assessed as a possible photosensitive reaction. Stay out of direct sun, cool the skin with damp cloths, and wear loose soft clothing. Apply a bland moisturiser or emollient to intact skin; avoid alcohol-based, fragranced, or numbing products that sting. Drink fluids and rest if you feel overheated. Leave blisters intact and cover them lightly if clothing rubs. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether Emollient Therapy or another treatment is suitable. Seek urgent care for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, facial swelling, or inability to drink. Arrange prompt assessment for extensive blistering, severe pain, rapidly worsening redness, pus, fever, eye symptoms, or skin involvement around a major joint.
