What should you know about random rash?

A rash may be flat, raised, scaly, blistered, or made of small spots. It can appear after a new soap, cosmetic, fabric, plant, food, or medicine. Irritant or allergic contact dermatitis often follows exposure, while heat rash develops when sweat ducts become blocked. Atopic dermatitis tends to cause dry, itchy, inflamed skin. Psoriasis may produce thicker, well-defined scaly areas. Ringworm often forms an expanding scaly edge, and scabies commonly causes intense itching that may be worse at night and can affect close contacts. Intertrigo favors warm, moist skin folds.

Take a clear photograph and note when the rash began, where it started, whether it is spreading, and what touched your skin or entered your body beforehand. Stop using a newly introduced nonessential product, wash gently with lukewarm water, and use a plain moisturizer if the skin is dry. Avoid scratching, friction, and sharing towels. Do not apply a steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic cream unless a clinician has advised it, because the wrong treatment can mask features or irritate the skin.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, skin peeling, purple or bruise-like spots, or sores involving the eyes or mouth. Arrange prompt assessment if fever, pus, warmth, or increasing tenderness accompanies the rash, or if it follows a new medicine. A clinician can examine the pattern and decide whether testing or prescription treatment is needed.

Ask which features make the rash more consistent with contact dermatitis, infection, or an inflammatory condition; whether any recent medicine or product should be stopped; what symptoms should trigger urgent review; and how to protect the skin while the cause is being clarified.
