What should you know about random light bleeding between periods?

Spotting can occur when hormone levels shift, after starting or missing hormonal contraception, or after irritation of the cervix, including after sex. Infections such as Chlamydia may cause bleeding with discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex. Endometrial Polyps and Uterine Fibroids can also disturb the uterine lining. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can present with bleeding between periods, but the symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Note when the spotting starts, its colour and amount, whether it follows sex, and any pain, discharge, fever, or missed period. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, and decide whether blood tests or imaging are appropriate. Avoid vaginal products that irritate the area, and do not self-treat suspected infection.

Book a review if spotting recurs, follows sex repeatedly, occurs after menopause, or comes with pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, or a change in your usual cycle. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or weakness. If you may be pregnant, contact a clinician promptly, especially when bleeding comes with pain or dizziness.

Ask whether the cervix needs examination, which infection tests are suitable, whether your contraception could explain the timing, and what follow-up is needed if the spotting continues. Mention your last cervical screening and any pregnancy possibility.
