Short answer

Random itchy feet can come from fungal infection, contact irritation, eczema, sweating, or dry and cracked skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the location can suggest

Athlete's foot often affects the spaces between the toes and may cause scaling, cracking, or soreness. It can also extend to the soles. Tiny intensely itchy blisters on the sides of the feet may fit dyshidrotic eczema. Redness or itching after new shoes, socks, adhesives, or products may indicate contact dermatitis.

Warm, damp footwear can keep the skin irritated and encourage fungal growth. Look for peeling, moisture, blisters, fissures, or a rash on one or both feet. A clinician may need to inspect the skin because eczema and fungal infection can resemble each other.

Foot care while you monitor it

Wash gently and dry carefully, especially between the toes. Change damp socks, rotate shoes so they can dry, and choose breathable footwear. Avoid scratching, sharing towels, or applying fragranced products to cracked skin. Keep a note of new shoes, gym or pool exposure, and whether the itch is between the toes, on the sole, or on the top of the foot.

If the pattern suggests a fungal infection, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether topical antifungal treatment is suitable and how long to use it. Do not stop as soon as the itch eases without checking the product instructions, and do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash.

When to arrange an examination

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, or a wound that is not healing. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early for breaks in foot skin.

Arrange review when itching persists, returns after treatment, involves the nails, or affects both feet in an unclear pattern. A clinician can distinguish infection from eczema and recommend care that protects the skin barrier.

Questions for your doctor

Does the rash look fungal, eczematous, or contact-related? Should I use an antifungal, and for how long? How should I care for cracked skin, footwear, socks, and household towels while it heals?

Questions people ask

Can sweaty feet cause itching?

Sweat and damp footwear can irritate the skin and create conditions that support fungal growth.

Should I use a steroid cream for itchy feet?

Not without advice if a fungal rash is possible, because a steroid alone can change or mask its appearance.
