Random itching all over the body: what to know

Itching may arise from dry or irritated skin, eczema, contact with a new product, an allergy, an infection, or a medicine. Sometimes the skin looks fairly normal even though the sensation is strong. Less commonly, persistent itching can accompany a blood disorder or an illness affecting the liver, kidneys, or thyroid. Itching is a presentation of Hodgkin Lymphoma, but itching alone does not establish that diagnosis. Vulvar Cancer can also cause local itching around the vulva rather than random itching across the whole body.

A clinician will consider where the itching started, whether there is a rash, what medicines and supplements you take, recent product changes, and symptoms such as fever, night sweating, weight change, yellowing of the skin, or tiredness.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing, choose lukewarm water, and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it. Loose cotton clothing and short, clean fingernails can reduce skin injury from scratching. Stop using a newly introduced scented product until a clinician or pharmacist has helped identify whether it is contributing. Keep a short record of triggers, visible skin changes, medicines, and times when the itching is strongest.

Arrange a medical appointment if the itching continues, disturbs sleep, spreads, or has no clear skin-related explanation. A clinician may examine the skin and decide whether blood tests or other checks are appropriate.

Seek urgent help for itching with swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. Prompt medical review is also appropriate when itching comes with yellow skin, dark urine, severe weakness, fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These combinations need assessment because they may signal an allergic reaction or a wider medical problem.

Ask what causes should be considered given the timing and distribution of the itch, whether your medicines could contribute, which skin-care changes are sensible, and whether an examination or blood tests are needed. Mention any rash, sleep disruption, new products, travel, or other symptoms even if they seem unrelated.
