Random Hives All Over the Body: What to Know

Random hives all over the body are raised, itchy welts that can appear suddenly, move to different areas, and fade while new ones develop. Their colour may be similar to the surrounding skin or look pink or red. Hives are a presentation of urticaria and do not by themselves identify one specific trigger.

Hives develop when chemical signals cause small blood vessels in the skin to leak fluid and create temporary raised areas. Triggers can include an infection, a medicine, a food, an insect sting, heat, cold, pressure, exercise, or emotional stress. Sometimes no clear cause is found. Individual welts often change shape or location rather than staying fixed. Swelling beneath the skin around the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet can occur with hives and is called angioedema.

Take a photo when the welts are visible and record recent foods, medicines, illness, stings, products, temperature exposure, and activities. This information can help a clinician look for a pattern. A rash that remains in the same place, hurts more than it itches, bruises, or leaves marks after fading needs a medical assessment because it may not be typical hives.

Keep the skin cool with a cool compress, wear loose clothing, and avoid rubbing or scratching the welts. Use gentle, fragrance-free skin products and pause any newly started non-essential product until you have advice. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without speaking with the prescriber.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable for you and how to take it safely. Some antihistamines can cause drowsiness, which matters for driving, work, and combining them with alcohol or other sedating medicines. If symptoms keep returning, a clinician may review possible triggers and treatment options, including antihistamine treatment.

Call emergency services immediately if hives occur with trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, faintness, sudden confusion, or swelling of the tongue or inside the mouth. These symptoms can signal a serious allergic reaction and can worsen quickly.

Seek prompt medical advice for swelling of the lips, eyelids, face, or throat; hives after a new medicine or sting; a widespread rash with fever or feeling very unwell; or symptoms that are not settling. A clinician can assess whether deeper swelling is present and whether another skin condition needs consideration.

Ask: Could a recent infection, medicine, food, sting, heat exposure, pressure, or activity be contributing? Are these features consistent with hives, or should another rash be checked?
