What should you know about random heat rash?

Heat rash, also called prickly heat, often appears in skin folds or under tight, non-breathable clothing. It may feel prickly or itchy and can look red, pink, or like clusters of tiny bumps. Sweat, humidity, exercise, fever, and prolonged skin contact can contribute. Similar-looking skin bumps, redness, or a rash may have other causes, so persistence and associated symptoms matter.

Move to a cooler setting, rinse gently with lukewarm or cool water, pat dry, and wear loose breathable clothing. Keep affected folds dry and avoid heavy oils, fragranced products, and scratching. A bland emollient may help dryness once the skin is no longer hot or sweaty. A clinician may recommend a short course of topical corticosteroids for selected inflammation; do not use them on your own, especially on the face or folds.

Seek medical advice if the rash spreads, lasts despite cooling, becomes painful, forms pus-filled blisters, or comes with fever or feeling unwell. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, confusion, or rapidly worsening skin pain. Babies, older adults, and people with significant illness may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether the pattern fits heat rash or another rash, which products are safe on the affected area, whether an emollient is suitable, and whether topical corticosteroids are appropriate for the location and duration.
