What should you know about random bloodshot eye?

Redness happens when small vessels on the white surface of the eye widen or leak. Dry air, smoke, dust, rubbing, contact lenses, and long periods of screen use may irritate the surface. Allergic Conjunctivitis commonly presents with itchy, watery, red eyes, while Conjunctivitis may cause discharge and eyes that stick together. A sharply defined red patch without pain or vision change can follow a minor surface vessel bleed. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause; pain, light sensitivity, discharge, injury, and changes in sight provide more useful clues.

Do not rub the eye. Rinse away loose irritants with clean water, rest from contact lenses and eye makeup, and use a cool clean compress if itching is prominent. Wash hands and avoid sharing towels if discharge suggests infection. Do not use someone else’s drops or leftover antibiotic treatment. If redness does not settle or keeps returning, arrange an examination; take contact-lens details and any recent injury or chemical exposure with you.

Get urgent eye care for severe pain, reduced or blurred vision, marked light sensitivity, a chemical splash, penetrating injury, an irregular pupil, or redness with headache and nausea. Contact-lens wearers with pain, light sensitivity, or vision change need prompt assessment because corneal infection can progress quickly.
