What should you know about a Ramson spirometer?

Short answer

A Ramson spirometer measures how much air you breathe out and how quickly, helping clinicians assess airflow and breathing problems.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the device measures

A spirometer records breathing during forced and relaxed manoeuvres. The results can include the amount of air exhaled and the speed of exhalation. Clinicians use the pattern, symptoms, examination, and medical history together; a reading is not a diagnosis on its own.

During Spirometry, you usually breathe through a clean mouthpiece while wearing a nose clip or keeping your nose sealed as instructed. Several attempts may be needed because posture, effort, technique, recent illness, and medicine use can affect the result.

How to prepare

Wear comfortable clothing and tell the testing team about chest pain, recent surgery, dizziness, infection, or difficulty following breathing instructions. Ask in advance whether to use or pause inhalers; do not stop prescribed treatment without clear instructions.

Before each attempt, sit or stand as directed, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and follow the technician's coaching. A cough, leak, or early stop may make a manoeuvre less useful, so report what happened rather than forcing repeated breaths beyond your comfort.

When to seek care

Tell the team immediately if testing causes severe breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, blue lips, or wheezing that does not settle. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty at rest, inability to speak in full sentences, or rapidly worsening symptoms, regardless of a previous spirometer result.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what each measured value means, whether the test was technically adequate, if a bronchodilator test or repeat assessment is needed, and how the findings fit your symptoms. Ask when results will be reviewed and what action should follow.

Questions people ask

Is spirometry painful?

The breathing manoeuvres can feel tiring or briefly uncomfortable, but the test should be stopped if you feel unwell.

Can one reading confirm asthma or another condition?

No. Clinicians interpret the pattern with your symptoms, history, examination, and sometimes further testing.
