What should you know about radiolucent gallstones?

Radiolucent describes how a material appears on an X-ray; it does not describe how severe the gallstone problem is. Gallstones can sit quietly in the gallbladder or obstruct a bile duct and cause symptoms. Upper abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea or vomiting may occur, but these symptoms also have many other causes. An abdominal ultrasound is commonly useful for assessing the gallbladder and bile ducts. The result is considered alongside your examination, liver-related tests and the pattern of pain.

Arrange a GP consultation if you have repeated upper abdominal discomfort, particularly after meals, or symptoms that are not settling. Keep a note of pain location, duration, triggers, fever, vomiting and any yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not assume that a normal plain X-ray excludes gallstones. A clinician may recommend ultrasound or other imaging and discuss observation, symptom control or gallbladder treatment depending on symptoms and complications.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever with abdominal pain, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, fainting or marked weakness. These signs can indicate blockage, infection or inflammation involving the gallbladder, bile ducts or pancreas and need prompt assessment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gallstones, which imaging test is most useful, and whether the stone’s appearance changes the plan. Ask what to eat while waiting, how to manage pain safely, and which symptoms should take you to urgent care.
