Radial nerve forearm pain: what to know

Short answer
Radial nerve forearm pain may come from irritation or pressure along the nerve, but similar symptoms can arise from muscles, tendons, or the neck and need examination when persistent.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Nerve-related clues
- Burning or electric pain, tingling, altered sensation, or difficulty lifting the wrist or fingers.
- Track
- Note whether symptoms change with neck, elbow, or wrist position.
Understanding the pattern
The radial nerve travels from the upper arm toward the back and outer side of the forearm, helping control several wrist and finger movements and carrying sensation from part of the hand. Irritation can cause burning, tingling, sensitivity, or pain that changes with elbow, wrist, or neck position. Weak wrist or finger lifting is more concerning than soreness alone. Forearm pain can also occur with Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow, although those conditions involve different tissues and tender areas.
Practical next steps
Temporarily reduce repeated gripping, forceful wrist turning, and prolonged pressure on the outer elbow or forearm. Change positions regularly and keep the wrist in a relaxed, neutral posture during work. Do not stretch aggressively into tingling. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess strength, sensation, neck movement, and nerve sensitivity before suggesting graded exercises or other treatment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment for new or worsening weakness, a wrist that drops, rapidly spreading numbness, severe pain after an injury, or an arm that becomes unusually pale or cold. Arrange a medical review when symptoms persist, disturb sleep, or are accompanied by neck pain. Sudden neurological symptoms affecting the face, speech, or one side of the body require emergency help.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the symptoms fit radial nerve irritation or another source, where the nerve may be compressed, and whether testing is needed. Ask which activities to modify and how strength and sensation should be monitored.

Questions people ask
Is every outer forearm ache nerve pain?
No. Muscles, tendons, joints, and the neck can create overlapping symptoms, and the pattern alone cannot confirm the source.
Can I exercise with these symptoms?
Choose activity that does not increase pain, tingling, or weakness and obtain guidance before nerve-specific exercises.
