What should you know about r0 measles?

Because measles can spread through the air, call a clinic before arriving if you think you or your child may have it. This allows the team to advise you about reducing contact with other people.

Measles, also called rubeola, is caused by a virus. It often begins with fever, tiredness, cough, a runny nose, and red or watery eyes. Small spots may appear inside the mouth, followed by a blotchy rash that commonly starts on the face or hairline and moves down the body. A fever may continue while the rash develops.

The illness can be more serious in babies, pregnant people, adults with weakened immune systems, and people with certain medical conditions. Possible complications include dehydration, an ear infection, breathing problems, or inflammation affecting the brain. Keep the person at home and limit contact with others, especially infants, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity. Offer frequent fluids and rest. Use fever medicine only as directed for the person’s age and health; do not give aspirin to children. Avoid sharing cups, towels, or utensils, and improve ventilation where possible. Do not start antibiotics unless a clinician identifies a bacterial infection. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. A child who is difficult to wake or appears seriously unwell needs immediate assessment.
