What should you know about quitting tamoxifen?

Do not stop tamoxifen on your own; discuss the reason, treatment purpose, and safer alternatives with your oncology team first. Tamoxifen can be used after treatment for hormone-sensitive breast cancer or to reduce risk in selected people. Missing doses or ending treatment changes the plan, but your clinician can help if side effects, pregnancy plans, cost concerns, or daily routines are making treatment difficult.

Tamoxifen blocks oestrogen signalling in breast tissue. The benefit of continuing depends on your diagnosis, recurrence risk, treatment history, age, other medicines, and whether tamoxifen is being used for treatment or risk reduction. Stopping may remove intended protection against hormone-sensitive disease. It does not usually cause a dangerous withdrawal syndrome, but the cancer-prevention or treatment plan may no longer work as intended.

Side effects can include hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, vaginal symptoms, and menstrual changes. Some symptoms have other causes, so report them rather than assuming the medicine is responsible.

Contact the prescriber or oncology nurse and describe what is happening, when it started, and how it affects daily life. Ask whether a dose review, symptom treatment, medicine switch, or planned break is appropriate. Do not double a missed dose unless your clinician specifically instructs you. Tell the team about new medicines, supplements, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any operation being planned.

Your clinician may discuss hormone therapy for cancer or risk-reducing endocrine therapy, depending on why tamoxifen was prescribed. Keep a written record of doses and symptoms so the decision is based on a clear pattern.

Seek urgent care for sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, or difficulty speaking. Report unusual vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or a new breast change promptly. These symptoms can have causes unrelated to tamoxifen, but they need timely assessment.

Ask why tamoxifen was prescribed, what could change if you stop, and how long the intended plan is. Ask about options for your specific side effects, interactions with other medicines, pregnancy planning, and the safest way to restart or switch treatment if a change is agreed.
