Quiescent ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis affects the lining of the large bowel and can alternate between active flares and quieter periods. In a quiescent phase, diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, urgency and abdominal pain may be absent or reduced. Symptoms alone may not show whether inflammation has completely settled, so clinicians combine your history with examination and appropriate tests. Quiescent disease describes current control; it does not mean that follow-up is no longer needed.

Continue prescribed treatment and discuss any side effects before making changes. Keep appointments, note changes in stool frequency or bleeding, and maintain a medication list that includes supplements. Choose a varied diet that suits you, with advice before making major restrictions. Rest when fatigue is prominent, stay active within your ability, and avoid smoking. Ask your care team how to manage an early change in symptoms and who to contact outside normal appointment times.

Contact your clinician if diarrhoea, urgency, blood or mucus in the stool, abdominal pain, fever or fatigue returns and persists. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain with swelling or vomiting, fainting, confusion or signs of dehydration. A GP consultation can help assess a new change and coordinate care. Screening or surveillance plans may be recommended separately from symptom treatment, so ask which colorectal checks apply to you.

Ask how remission is assessed, which early warning signs matter most for you, and whether your medicines need review. Discuss the timing of follow-up, colorectal cancer screening or surveillance, vaccines, and support for diet, fatigue or pregnancy planning.
