Quick relief for tension headache

Short answer
Quick relief for a tension headache may come from water, rest, gentle neck movement, a quiet room and suitable pain relief used as directed.

What a tension headache can feel like
A tension headache often feels like steady pressure or a tight band around the forehead, temples or back of the head. Tender scalp, neck or shoulder muscles can occur alongside it. Long screen sessions, jaw clenching, poor posture, missed meals, stress, tiredness or not drinking enough can contribute. The pattern is usually different from a sudden, severe headache, but symptoms can overlap with other causes.
Steps that may ease it
Pause close work and sit with your back supported. Sip water, loosen tight clothing and rest in a calm, dim space. Apply a warm pack to the neck or shoulders, or a cool cloth to the forehead, and gently roll the shoulders without forcing the movement. Eat if you have missed a meal. Paracetamol or another suitable medicine may help when taken according to its label; check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have another condition or take regular medicines. Frequent painkiller use can itself contribute to recurring headaches, so seek advice if you need it often.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for a headache that starts suddenly and intensely, follows a head injury, or comes with weakness, fainting, confusion, a seizure, trouble speaking, new vision loss, fever with a stiff neck, or repeated vomiting. Arrange a clinical assessment if headaches keep returning, change pattern, disrupt sleep or daily activities, or do not settle with usual measures. A clinician can review triggers and examine you; a GP Consultation may be useful.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what type of headache fits your symptoms, whether your medicines or blood pressure could contribute, and which pain reliever is suitable for you. Mention when the pain begins, how long it lasts, where it is felt, and any associated symptoms.
