Short answer

Quick relief may come from cooling your skin, slowing your breathing, and avoiding personal triggers; persistent hot flashes deserve a treatment review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why hot flashes happen

A hot flash is a sudden wave of heat, often involving the face, neck, or chest, with sweating, flushing, chills, or a pounding heartbeat. Changes in the brain’s temperature control can make ordinary shifts in body temperature feel intense. Hot flashes commonly occur during perimenopause and menopause, but medicines, thyroid problems, infection, or other conditions can also cause flushing.

The symptom itself does not identify one diagnosis. New, severe, or changing episodes need context such as your menstrual pattern, medicines, sleep, and other symptoms.

Ways to cool an episode

Move to a cooler place, loosen a layer, sip cool water, and use a fan or cool cloth on your face and neck. Breathe slowly and evenly until the wave passes. Wear breathable layers and keep your bedroom comfortable. Record timing, food or drink, stress, sleep, and medicines to identify patterns.

If episodes interfere with work or sleep, discuss Hormone Replacement Therapy or Non-Hormonal Menopause Treatment. The suitable option depends on your health history, bleeding pattern, and risks. Do not change prescribed medicines without guidance.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for a hot episode with chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, or new weakness. Arrange a clinical review when flushing is new, occurs with fever or unexplained weight change, or repeatedly disrupts sleep. Seek advice about Premature Ovarian Insufficiency if periods stop earlier than expected.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be triggering your episodes, whether another condition or medicine should be checked, and which hormonal or non-hormonal treatment suits your symptoms and history.
