This type of treatment may help some people manage pain or participate more comfortably in movement exercises, but it does not correct every underlying cause. The device should be one part of a plan that may include education, graded activity, manual treatment, or strengthening.

Tell the clinician about implanted electrical devices, heart rhythm problems, reduced sensation, skin irritation, pregnancy, epilepsy, or an unexplained painful area before treatment. Electrodes should sit on intact skin, away from areas where sensation is absent, and the settings should be increased gradually while you report what you feel.

Stop the session if stimulation causes burning, sharp pain, dizziness, unusual palpitations, worsening weakness, or a skin reaction that persists. Seek medical assessment for new or worsening lower-back pain with leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms need medical evaluation rather than symptom masking.

Ask what the device is intended to achieve, where electrodes will be placed, how long a trial should last, and how improvement will be measured. Clarify whether a TENS unit is suitable for your symptoms, which conditions make stimulation unsuitable, and what active exercises should accompany treatment.
