What should you know about quadruplet twins?

Quadruplets are four babies developing in the same pregnancy. The babies may have separate or shared placentas and sacs, and ultrasound findings help the team understand their arrangement. A multiple pregnancy can place greater physical demands on the uterus, heart, and circulation, while the babies may need assessment for growth and wellbeing.

Care is usually coordinated by an obstetric team with experience in multiple pregnancies. The plan considers the babies’ positions, growth, placental arrangement, your health, and signs of early labour. Delivery planning may include a Caesarean Section, although the safest approach is individual.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular tightening or contractions, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache with visual symptoms, sudden swelling, or a clear reduction in fetal movement. With four babies, the team may want assessment even when symptoms feel mild.

Ask how many placentas and sacs are present, how often growth will be checked, what symptoms require immediate attendance, and how the planned birth may change if a baby’s position or growth changes.
