What should you know about quad tendon rupture?

Short answer
A quad tendon rupture is a serious knee injury that can prevent active straightening and needs prompt orthopedic assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
The quadriceps tendon connects the thigh muscles to the kneecap. A complete tear can interrupt the mechanism that straightens the knee; a partial tear may preserve some movement but still cause pain and weakness. People may notice a pop, swelling above the kneecap, a gap, or the knee giving way. Examination and sometimes imaging help distinguish a tendon injury from a muscle strain, kneecap problem, or fracture.
What to do
Stop sport and protect the leg until assessed. Keep the knee supported in a comfortable position, avoid forceful bending, and use crutches if advised. Do not massage the area or test strength repeatedly. Treatment depends on tear severity, function, and other injuries; some complete ruptures require Tendon Repair Surgery. Following treatment, Post-Operative Rehabilitation may restore controlled motion, strength, and walking through staged exercises.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical assessment after a pop with sudden weakness, visible swelling, a change in the kneecap position, or inability to lift the straight leg. Emergency care is appropriate for severe pain after major trauma, an open wound, a cold or numb foot, or rapidly increasing swelling. Do not wait for symptoms to settle if the knee cannot actively straighten.
Questions for your doctor
Is the tear partial or complete? Do I need imaging or surgery? How should the knee be protected now? When can rehabilitation begin, and which movements are restricted?

Questions people ask
Can a quad tendon rupture heal without surgery?
Management varies with tear size and knee function; a clinician must assess the injury before recommending protection, rehabilitation, or repair.
Can I walk with this injury?
Some people can walk with support, while others cannot straighten the knee safely; avoid relying on the leg until assessed.
