What should you know about q switch laser lips?

A Q-switched device uses brief pulses of light that can fragment selected pigment. Darkening around the lips may relate to sun exposure, irritation, a previous injury, cosmetics, smoking, medication or an underlying lip condition. Pigment on the outer lip skin is different from pigment on the wet inner lip, and the correct diagnosis influences whether laser is appropriate.

The area may feel tender and can become red, swollen, dry or temporarily darker after treatment. Cold sores can recur after procedures around the mouth, so tell the clinician about previous episodes. Do not assume a dark, changing or bleeding spot is cosmetic pigmentation.

Stop any product that is irritating the lips and arrange an assessment before treatment. Mention lip fillers or other procedures, active sores, allergies, medicines and a history of delayed healing. Ask whether antiviral prevention, a test area or a different approach is needed.

Follow the clinic's instructions for cleansing and moisturising. Protect the lips and surrounding skin from sunlight, avoid picking peeling skin, and pause fragranced or exfoliating products while the area settles. Use only products recommended for the treated site.

Contact the clinic if swelling is increasing, pain is severe, blisters appear, or the skin cracks and does not begin to settle. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, pus, fever, facial swelling, trouble swallowing or breathing, eye symptoms, or a new changing lesion on the lip.
