Q-switched systems deliver very brief bursts of light that target pigment or tattoo ink. Safe use depends on the device, wavelength, pulse settings, skin tone, treatment area, and the reason for treatment. A home device may be poorly matched to the concern or may be used over a changing mole, infection, irritated skin, or a recently tanned area. Eye exposure is another concern, especially near the face. Burns, blisters, prolonged redness, pigment becoming darker or lighter, and scarring can follow an unsuitable treatment.
