Pus-filled razor bumps: what to know

After a close shave, a cut hair can curve back toward the skin and trigger a raised, tender or itchy bump. This pattern is called pseudofolliculitis barbae when it affects shaved areas such as the beard region, although similar bumps can occur elsewhere. Folliculitis can overlap when the follicle becomes inflamed or infected. Rough follicular bumps from keratosis pilaris are a separate possibility, so timing after shaving and the visible hair pattern are useful clues.

Allow the skin to recover before shaving again. Wash gently, avoid picking, and do not try to excavate a trapped hair with a needle. When you resume, use a clean sharp razor, light strokes, and the direction of growth; avoid repeated passes over one area. If the problem keeps returning, a clinician can discuss treatment for razor bumps or whether laser hair removal is suitable for reducing close shaving.

Arrange care if bumps persist despite a shaving break, form firm scars, spread beyond the shaved area, or repeatedly contain drainage. Fever, rapidly worsening pain, spreading redness, or swelling near the eye calls for urgent evaluation. A clinician should also review recurrent lesions when they affect work, sleep, or daily grooming, because the plan may need to address both ingrown hairs and follicle inflammation.

Ask whether the bumps are razor bumps, folliculitis, or another condition; which shaving method is least irritating; and whether a prescribed product is needed. Share the body area, shaving frequency, type of razor, hair texture, previous treatments, and any dark marks or scars left behind.
