Pus bumps after shaving: what to know

A close shave can leave a hair tip sharp enough to curve back into the skin. The resulting inflammation may form a small pus-filled bump, especially where hair is coarse or curls tightly. Folliculitis affects the follicle itself and can be promoted by friction, sweat, or contaminated tools. Keratosis pilaris creates rough follicular bumps and is a different process. Location, timing, itch, pain, and whether hairs are trapped help a clinician separate these possibilities.

Pause shaving until the skin settles. Rinse gently, pat dry, and avoid picking or digging for trapped hairs. Use a clean razor, do not share it, and shave in the direction of growth with light pressure when you resume. A clinician can discuss suitable treatment for folliculitis or razor bumps. For repeated problems, laser hair removal may reduce the need for close shaving, but suitability depends on skin and hair characteristics.

Seek care if bumps are rapidly spreading, deeply painful, draining heavily, leaving scars, or returning after each shave. Fever, chills, a red streak, or swelling near the eyes needs prompt attention. Ask for an assessment if the rash does not settle after stopping shaving, because persistent bumps may need a different approach.
