What should you know about pure seminoma?

Seminoma most often begins in a testicle, although germ cell tumours can occur in other locations. Pure means the examined tumour contains seminoma rather than a mixture that includes other germ cell tumour types. The diagnosis is made from the tissue removed or sampled, together with examination, imaging and blood tests.

Symptoms may include a painless testicular swelling, a feeling of heaviness or discomfort, but symptoms vary and can have other causes. The care team assesses the tumour’s size and position, whether it has spread to lymph nodes or other organs, and whether blood markers are raised. These findings determine the stage and shape the treatment conversation.

Treatment commonly begins with tumour removal surgery to remove the affected testicle and obtain a definitive diagnosis. Depending on stage and other findings, choices may include careful surveillance, chemotherapy or another treatment approach. Surveillance involves scheduled examinations, scans and blood tests, so appointments remain part of treatment even when no immediate additional therapy is given.

Ask about fertility preservation before surgery or chemotherapy if having children may matter to you. Discuss the effect of treatment on hormone levels, sexual function, physical recovery and the appearance of the scrotum. Report a new lump, increasing swelling or persistent pain rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new testicular lump, rapid swelling, persistent heaviness or unexplained ache. Seek emergency help for sudden severe testicular pain, nausea with swelling, fainting, severe breathlessness or chest pain. These symptoms need urgent assessment because they may reflect problems other than a tumour.
