What should you know about puppy ringworm?

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm. In a puppy it may produce circular or irregular patches with scaling, crusting, broken hairs, or hair loss. Some puppies have mild signs, while others develop more widespread irritation. The fungus can pass between animals and people through direct contact or contaminated bedding, brushes, and surfaces. Other skin problems can look similar, so a veterinarian may examine hairs or skin samples.

Arrange veterinary assessment and follow the full treatment plan. Depending on the extent and site of infection, care may include a topical antifungal treatment, an oral antifungal treatment, or both. Wash bedding as directed, clean commonly touched surfaces, avoid sharing brushes, and wash your hands after handling the puppy. Keep children and vulnerable household members from close contact until your veterinarian advises that precautions can ease.

Seek veterinary care promptly for rapidly spreading lesions, painful or pus-filled areas, eye involvement, marked lethargy, or a puppy that stops eating. Ask a doctor about any new itchy or scaly rash in a household member after contact with the puppy.

Ask how the diagnosis will be checked, whether other pets need examination, how to clean the home safely, and when the puppy can resume close contact with people and animals.
