What should you know about puppp rash?

PUPPP, also called polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, can spread from the abdomen to the thighs, buttocks, or other areas. It may look like small red bumps, patches, or plaques, with intense itching. It generally does not involve the area around the navel in the same way as some alternative pregnancy rashes. A clinician considers the timing of pregnancy, appearance, distribution, and any medicines or exposures before confirming the diagnosis.

Keep the skin cool, wear loose breathable clothing, use bland fragrance-free moisturiser, and take short lukewarm showers. Do not scratch; trimmed nails and cool compresses can reduce skin injury. Speak with your obstetric or dermatology clinician before using medicines in pregnancy. They may recommend a pregnancy-appropriate topical treatment or antihistamine after reviewing your symptoms and medical history.

Contact your maternity or medical team promptly for severe itching without much of a rash, itching on the palms or soles, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, fever, blistering, facial swelling, or feeling unwell. Those features can point to another problem and need assessment.
