What should you know about pulsed dye laser therapy?

Short answer

Pulsed dye laser therapy directs short yellow-light pulses at selected skin blood vessels, with settings tailored to the treatment area and diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How therapy works

The light is absorbed more strongly by blood than by surrounding tissue. That energy creates heat in the intended vessels, which the body gradually clears or remodels. Clinicians may use this approach for facial redness, thread veins, vascular marks, and selected scar changes. Treatment is performed on clean skin with eye protection. Cooling can reduce heat at the surface, although a brief snapping or stinging sensation is possible.

Before and after treatment

Share your full medical and skin history, including medicines that affect bleeding or light sensitivity, recent tanning, active infection, and previous reactions to lasers. Arrive with the area free of irritating products if instructed. After therapy, keep to gentle cleansing, avoid scratching, and follow directions for moisturiser and sun protection. Do not assume a darker mark or crust should be removed; let the clinic advise you.

Warning signs

Ask the clinic to review severe or increasing pain, extensive blistering, spreading redness, pus, or swelling that does not begin settling. Get urgent help if treatment is followed by vision changes, severe eye pain, or breathing difficulty. If a treated mark changes in a way that concerns you, arrange an examination before scheduling more therapy.

Useful questions

What is the treatment target, and why is this wavelength suitable? Which short-term skin changes are expected for my complexion? What should I stop before treatment, and when can I resume active products or exercise? What follow-up will assess the response?
