What should you know about pulsed dye laser surgery?

The device is commonly considered for redness, small visible vessels, vascular birthmarks, and some scars or inflammatory skin changes. A clinician selects settings according to the area, skin tone, diagnosis, and treatment goal. The handpiece delivers repeated pulses over the skin; cooling may be used to make treatment more tolerable and protect the surface. Temporary redness, swelling, or bruise-like purple marks can follow, and the treated area may need time to settle.

Have the area assessed before treatment, especially if a spot is new, changing, bleeding, or not clearly diagnosed. Tell the clinician about medicines, supplements, cold-sore history, tanning, and any tendency to form raised scars. Follow the clinic’s instructions about cleansing, sun exposure, and products. Afterward, use gentle skin care and do not pick or rub crusted areas. Protect treated skin from sunlight as advised while it heals.

Contact the treating clinic if pain is worsening, swelling is marked, blisters develop, or the skin becomes increasingly hot or drains fluid. Seek urgent assessment for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, eye pain or vision change, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. A persistent change in colour or texture also deserves review rather than repeated self-treatment.
