What should you know about a pulmonary nodule after COVID?

A nodule can be new, unchanged, or growing. It may represent scar tissue, infection-related change, inflammation, or a tumour, and the presence of a nodule does not by itself diagnose cancer. A [CT Scan](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/ct-scan/) gives more detail than a routine chest image and may clarify whether the finding is solid, partly solid, or filled with air or fluid. Comparing prior scans is often especially useful.

Ask for the written report and whether earlier chest images can be compared. Your clinician may recommend another scan after an interval, referral to a specialist, or tissue sampling if the appearance or change warrants it. A [Biopsy](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/biopsy/) removes a sample for laboratory examination, but it is not needed for every nodule. Keep a record of cough, breathlessness, fever, chest pain, and smoking or occupational exposure history. Do not assume that the timing after COVID gives a definite explanation.

Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, severe chest pain, or fainting. Contact your clinician promptly for persistent fever, worsening cough, or reduced ability to manage normal activities. These warning signs need assessment regardless of what the nodule eventually proves to be.

Ask what the nodule’s size, density, and location are; whether it appears related to infection; whether older images are available; and when a repeat scan is appropriate. Ask what change would lead to biopsy or specialist review, which symptoms should prompt earlier contact, and how your medical history affects the plan.
