Pulled Abdominal Muscle During Pregnancy

Short answer
Pregnancy can make the abdominal wall and supporting tissues work differently, and a pulled muscle may cause local pain that changes with movement, coughing, or getting out of bed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
As the abdomen grows, posture, balance, and load on the abdominal wall change. A twist, sudden effort, coughing episode, or lifting movement may irritate a muscle. Muscular pain is often local and linked to a particular action, but pregnancy-related pain can also come from ligaments, the pelvis, urinary tract, bowel, or the pregnancy itself. A self-assessment cannot safely separate these causes, especially when pain is new, strong, or persistent.
What to do
Stop the movement that triggered the pain and use slow position changes. Gentle walking may be suitable if it does not increase symptoms. Rest in a comfortable supported position, and ask your maternity clinician before taking any pain medicine, using heat, or starting exercises. Avoid heavy lifting, forceful abdominal exercises, and deep stretches. A physiotherapist experienced in pregnancy can show safer ways to roll, stand, cough, and strengthen gradually.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team urgently for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular tightening, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, faintness, painful urination, reduced fetal movement when you would normally notice it, or a new painful bulge. Emergency help is appropriate for severe pain with breathlessness, collapse, or heavy bleeding. Even without these signs, ask for assessment when symptoms are difficult to locate or are not easing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which causes need excluding, whether your symptoms fit a muscle problem, which medicines and positions are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, and when pregnancy-specific physiotherapy would be helpful.

Questions people ask
Is abdominal muscle pain common in pregnancy?
Abdominal and pelvic discomfort can have several causes during pregnancy. Pain that is new, persistent, or associated with bleeding or contractions should be discussed with the maternity team.
Can I use a heat pack?
Ask your maternity clinician first. If they approve warmth, use a comfortably warm—not hot—pack for a short period and protect the skin.
