What should you know about puffy eyes and face?

Morning fullness that improves during the day can be related to position and fluid movement. Rubbing, sun exposure, a new product, or an allergy may cause itching, redness, or more widespread swelling. Long-standing bags can reflect eyelid skin laxity or fat prominence; a tear trough hollow can add a shadow that makes the lower eye look swollen. Hot, painful, spreading facial redness may indicate a skin infection. Swelling in several areas, or swelling with breathlessness, deserves broader medical assessment.

Keep a brief record of timing, foods, medicines, products, and whether the swelling affects both sides. Avoid rubbing, alcohol-based or fragranced products, and unprescribed creams near the eyes. A cool compress over closed eyes may ease temporary discomfort. If the change persists or recurs, arrange an examination so a clinician can review the skin, eyelids, mouth, and other symptoms before cosmetic treatment is considered.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, breathing or swallowing difficulty, faintness, or sudden widespread swelling. Seek same-day care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe facial pain, pus, eye pain with movement, or blurred or reduced vision. These signs can involve an allergic emergency, infection, or the eye itself.

Ask whether the distribution suggests allergy, irritation, infection, or a structural eyelid change; which medicines or products should be avoided; and what monitoring is needed. If the puffiness is longstanding, ask whether under-eye filler or eyelid surgery would address the actual feature and what alternatives exist.
