Puberty-delaying treatment

Puberty can be delayed because the brain signals, ovaries, thyroid, nutrition, general health, or genetic factors are affecting development. Treatment is not one single medicine or schedule. An endocrinology team considers growth, examination findings, blood tests, bone development, emotional wellbeing, and the reason puberty has not progressed. Turner syndrome is one condition that may affect ovarian function and requires individual planning.

Start with a review of growth history, family timing of puberty, symptoms, medicines, and long-term health. Tests may include hormone assessment and imaging chosen for the clinical question. If the body is not producing enough sex hormones, a specialist may discuss carefully timed hormone replacement to support development and bone health. Treatment is reviewed over time, with attention to physical changes, mood, side effects, and the young person’s preferences.

Arrange medical assessment when development has not started or has stopped progressing, periods have not begun when expected, growth changes are concerning, or there are symptoms such as headaches, vision changes, marked weight change, or excessive thirst. Seek urgent care for severe headache with vomiting, sudden visual loss, or collapse. Delayed puberty is a symptom to investigate, not a diagnosis to self-treat.

Ask which tests are needed, what cause is being considered, whether treatment would pause changes or replace missing hormones, and how growth and bone health will be followed. Ask how the young person can be included in decisions and who to contact about side effects.
