What does a PSA test mean in men?

PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen. Prostate cells release it, and a blood test reports how much is present in the sample. A result is a clue, not a verdict. Benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, recent ejaculation and medical procedures can all influence PSA.

For men, the meaning depends on age, symptoms, family history, prostate size, medicines and whether the level has changed. A clinician may compare the result with earlier tests and decide whether more assessment is useful.

Read the laboratory’s reference interval, but do not use it as a stand-alone diagnosis. Tell the clinician about difficulty passing urine, pain, fever, a recent infection, prostate examination or procedure, and medicines for urinary symptoms. They may recommend repeating the blood test under suitable conditions or adding an examination and other tests.

Write down the result and date, then ask how it compares with your previous measurements. A calm, planned review helps distinguish a temporary change from a pattern that needs investigation.

Contact the requesting clinician for a planned explanation of an unexpected, raised or changing result. Seek urgent medical help if you cannot urinate, or if fever and chills occur with pelvic pain or urinary symptoms. Those signs can indicate infection or obstruction and should not wait for routine screening follow-up.
