What should you know about Protopic as a calcineurin inhibitor?

Calcineurin inhibitors interrupt part of the immune signalling pathway involved in inflammatory rashes. Used on the skin, tacrolimus can reduce itch, redness, and irritation without being a topical corticosteroid. A clinician may consider it for eczema-prone areas, including skin where repeated steroid use needs careful planning.

The ointment does not treat every rash. A fungal, bacterial, or viral infection may need a different approach, so diagnosis matters before use. Stinging or warmth at first is possible, particularly when the barrier is damaged.

Apply only to the areas and schedule specified by your prescriber. Use a small amount in a thin film on clean, dry skin, wash your hands afterward, and avoid the eyes and mouth. Keep regular emollient care in the plan, leaving enough time between products if your clinician recommends it.

Protect treated skin from strong sunlight and avoid tanning devices. Mention all skin products and medicines at appointments, including treatments bought without a prescription. If the condition is not settling or repeatedly returns, request a review instead of extending treatment independently.

Get medical advice if the rash becomes painful, hot, swollen, crusted, or draining, or if you develop grouped blisters. Urgent care is appropriate for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. Eye pain or a rash close to the eye should be assessed promptly.
