What should you know about Protopic (Astellas)?

Protopic contains tacrolimus, a topical calcineurin inhibitor. It reduces certain immune signals in the skin, helping settle redness, itching, and inflammation. It is commonly discussed for eczema and other inflammatory rashes, especially when a steroid-sparing option is useful or when delicate areas need careful treatment.

It is applied to affected skin rather than taken by mouth. Burning, warmth, or itching can occur soon after application and may ease as the skin adjusts. The medicine should not be applied to infected skin unless the prescriber has given specific instructions.

Use a thin layer exactly as prescribed, wash your hands afterward, and keep the ointment away from the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes. Follow the plan for moisturiser, bathing, and sun protection provided by your clinician. Avoid covering the treated area with airtight dressings unless instructed.

Tell the prescriber about infections, immune problems, medicines, pregnancy, or breastfeeding before starting. Do not share the tube. If the rash does not improve, returns frequently, or becomes harder to control, arrange a review rather than changing the schedule yourself.

Contact a clinician promptly if treated skin develops spreading redness, pus, marked swelling, increasing pain, or blisters. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, or a severe widespread reaction. New or worsening symptoms after application deserve review, particularly around the eyes.
