Protocol for embryo transfer

The clinic first chooses a cycle plan. In a fresh transfer, transfer timing follows egg collection and embryo development. In a frozen transfer, the womb lining may be prepared with hormones or monitored during an ovulatory cycle. Ultrasound and hormone checks help the team choose timing that matches the embryo and the lining.

On transfer day, a clinician places a thin catheter through the cervix into the womb and releases the embryo. The procedure is usually brief, but cramping or light spotting can occur. Progesterone, including micronised progesterone when prescribed, supports the womb lining. A pregnancy test is arranged for the date given by the clinic; testing too early can be confusing if fertility medicines remain in the body.

Use every medicine at the instructed dose and time, and check before stopping progesterone or other support. Attend scans and blood tests even if you feel well. After transfer, ordinary gentle activity is generally compatible with care, but follow your clinic's specific advice about exercise, sex, travel and work. Keep emergency contact details available and tell the team about new medicines or illness.

Contact the clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, fainting, marked abdominal swelling, vomiting or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment because complications can occur after fertility treatment. Seek urgent emergency care for collapse, severe breathlessness or intense pain. Light spotting alone does not show whether treatment has worked.
