Proteus mirabilis osteomyelitis: what to know

Osteomyelitis is infection within bone. Proteus mirabilis is a bacterium that can be identified from a wound, blood, or tissue sample, although the useful sample depends on the situation. Infection may reach bone through an open injury, surgery, nearby tissue, or the bloodstream. It can affect a previously injured bone and may be associated with drainage, an ulcer, or implanted material.

Pain, warmth, swelling, reduced movement, fever, fatigue, or a wound that does not settle can occur. Some people have few general symptoms. Imaging helps show bone involvement, while laboratory tests and cultures help guide treatment.

Arrange prompt review with an orthopaedic or infectious-disease clinician. Treatment commonly involves an antibiotic selected for the identified organism and the infection site; the route and duration depend on test results and clinical response. Keep any wound clean and covered as instructed, and avoid changing or stopping prescribed medicine without advice.

Surgery may be considered to drain an abscess, remove unhealthy tissue, stabilise bone, or address material that prevents healing. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing pain or swelling, spreading redness, high fever, shaking chills, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or a new inability to use the limb.
