What should you know about a prostatitis test?

A prostatitis assessment combines your symptoms, an examination, and urine testing to look for inflammation or infection. There is no single test that confirms every type of prostatitis. Your clinician may ask when pain or urinary changes began, whether you have fever, and about recent infections or procedures.

A urine sample can help identify bacteria or signs of urinary inflammation, while blood tests may be considered when you feel generally unwell. The clinician may gently examine the abdomen and, when appropriate, the prostate. This can help distinguish prostatitis from a urinary tract infection or another cause of difficulty passing urine, frequent urination, painful urination, or urinary urgency. Results must be interpreted alongside your symptoms; a negative sample does not explain every pelvic pain pattern.

Arrange a GP Consultation and describe all urinary, pelvic, and sexual symptoms clearly. Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, recent catheter use, and previous urinary infections. Do not start leftover antibiotics before testing unless a clinician has advised it, because this can affect the sample and may not treat the underlying problem. Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, develop a high temperature with chills, become confused or faint, or feel rapidly worse. Fever with pelvic or urinary pain can signal an infection needing prompt treatment. New severe flank or abdominal pain, vomiting, or visible blood in urine also deserves same-day clinical advice.
