What should you know about prostatitis MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging uses a strong magnetic field to create detailed pictures. It does not diagnose every cause of pelvic or urinary discomfort by itself. A clinician may combine the images with your symptoms, examination, urine testing, and other assessment. MRI can be useful when inflammation needs closer assessment or when another prostate or pelvic problem must be considered.

Tell the imaging team about metal implants, fragments, a pacemaker, or severe claustrophobia before the appointment. They will explain whether contrast is needed and how to prepare.

Arrange a GP Consultation if urinary symptoms or pelvic pain continue, and take a list of medicines and previous test results. During the scan, remain still while the machine takes images; you can communicate with the team. Ask when and how the result will be discussed. Treatment depends on the cause: bacterial infection may need prescribed Antibiotic Treatment, while non-bacterial symptoms may need a different plan.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, develop a high fever or shaking chills, become confused or faint, or feel rapidly more unwell. Difficulty Passing Urine with severe lower abdominal pain needs prompt assessment because the bladder may need urgent relief.

Ask what the MRI is intended to clarify, whether contrast is planned, what preparation applies to you, and which symptoms should prompt faster review.
