What should you know about prostatitis infection?

Bacteria can move from the urinary tract into the prostate. Infection may cause burning or painful urination, urgency, frequent urination, difficulty passing urine, pain in the pelvis or lower back, fever, chills, and tiredness. Symptoms can begin suddenly or develop more gradually.

A clinician may test urine and ask about previous infections, sexual health, medicines, and recent procedures. An examination helps distinguish prostate infection from other causes of urinary symptoms. A negative initial test does not mean ongoing symptoms should be ignored; follow-up may be needed.

Arrange medical assessment when infection is suspected. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them according to the instructions and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised a fluid restriction, rest, and keep review appointments. Tell the clinician about allergies and all medicines you take.

Seek urgent help for inability to pass urine, high fever with shaking chills, confusion, faintness, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening pain. A severe prostate infection can affect the whole body and may need hospital treatment. Contact your clinician if symptoms fail to improve or return after treatment.
