Muscle relaxants and prostate symptoms

Muscle relaxants reduce muscle spasm or the painful tightening that can restrict movement. They do not treat every cause of pelvic pain, urinary difficulty, prostate enlargement, infection, or cancer. A clinician may need to distinguish prostate-related symptoms from pelvic-floor tension, hip or back pain, nerve irritation, or a [Back Muscle Spasm](/symptoms/back-muscle-spasm/). [Muscle Cramps](/symptoms/muscle-cramps/) are another muscle problem with a different pattern.

Some muscle relaxants can cause sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, weakness, or slower reactions. Combining them with alcohol, sedatives, or other medicines that cause drowsiness can increase safety risks. The choice and duration depend on the medicine, medical history, kidney or liver function, and other treatments.

Do not start, stop, share, or increase a muscle relaxant without a prescriber’s advice. Give the clinician a full list of medicines and describe pain location, urinary symptoms, fever, sexual symptoms, bowel changes, and whether movement changes the discomfort. Use the prescribed dose only, avoid driving until you know how it affects you, and ask whether gentle physiotherapy or another treatment addresses the suspected source.

Seek urgent medical care for inability to pass urine, severe lower abdominal pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, blood in the urine, severe back pain with leg weakness, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. Get emergency help for fainting, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or extreme sedation after taking a medicine.
