What should you know about prostate cancer lab tests?

A blood test may measure prostate-specific antigen, often called PSA. A raised result can occur with prostate cancer, but also with benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, or recent irritation. A lower result does not rule out every prostate problem. Doctors interpret the number alongside age, symptoms, examination, previous results, medicines, and other findings.

Other blood or urine tests may check kidney function, blood counts, infection, or general fitness before imaging and treatment. A biopsy examines prostate tissue and is different from a blood test; it may be recommended when the overall assessment calls for tissue confirmation.

Ask which test is being ordered, why it is needed, and whether medicines or a recent urinary infection could affect interpretation. Give the team your previous results and mention procedures, ejaculation, cycling, or urinary symptoms if they ask about factors around testing. Do not interpret one result in isolation or change prescribed medicines without advice.

If results are concerning, the next step may be repeat testing, examination, imaging, or biopsy. Your clinician should explain what each option would add before you decide.

Arrange prompt medical review for persistent blood in urine, burning with urination, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have fever with urinary symptoms, or develop severe back pain with leg weakness or numbness.
