What should you know about propranolol itching?

Itching can occur with dry skin, eczema, contact irritation, hives, infection or another skin condition. A medication reaction is one possibility, especially when symptoms begin after starting propranolol or after a dose change, but the symptom alone cannot identify the cause. Most people with atopic dermatitis notice intense itching, while hives tend to produce raised, shifting welts.

Describe where the itch is, whether there is a rash, and whether it is worse at night. Mention new soaps, creams, foods, travel, household contacts and other medicines. This helps separate a medicine-related reaction from scabies, contact dermatitis or another cause.

Do not stop propranolol suddenly without medical advice, particularly if it was prescribed for a heart or blood-pressure problem. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist soon to review timing, dose and alternatives. Use a bland moisturiser, keep showers lukewarm, avoid scratching and choose fragrance-free cleansing products.

Avoid applying a new medicated cream over a widespread or unexplained rash without guidance. Take clear photographs and keep a short symptom diary, including each dose and any associated swelling, wheeze or dizziness.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness or rapidly spreading hives. Seek same-day care for a painful rash, skin peeling, blisters, mouth or eye sores, fever, or widespread symptoms after a new medicine.
