What should you know about professional silicone scar sheets?

The sheet forms a breathable protective layer over the scar and reduces friction and moisture loss. It is generally considered for closed, healed skin rather than an open wound. Raised, firm, itchy, or recently healed scars may need assessment before you start, because the scar’s age, position, movement, and skin sensitivity affect the plan.

Clean and dry the skin before applying the sheet, and cut it so it covers the scar without unnecessarily covering nearby skin. Build wearing time gradually if your clinician recommends it. Remove it to wash both the skin and sheet, and inspect for redness, itching, softening skin, or a rash. Stop and ask for advice if irritation persists; never place it over infection, drainage, or an unhealed incision.

Arrange a clinical review if the scar is growing beyond the original wound, becoming painful, bleeding, ulcerated, or changing quickly. Seek advice for spreading redness, pus, fever, or worsening tenderness around a healing site. A sheet cannot replace assessment when the diagnosis is uncertain or when a scar restricts movement.

Ask whether the skin is healed enough, how long to wear the sheet each day, how to clean it, when to replace it, and whether another scar treatment is more suitable for its shape or symptoms.
