What should you know about producing liquid nitrogen?

Air contains nitrogen along with oxygen and other gases. Industrial systems first clean and compress air, cool it until it becomes liquid, then separate its components using differences in boiling points. The nitrogen fraction is collected and stored in purpose-built containers. This process is very different from freezing a cosmetic product or making a material in a household freezer.

Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold and can damage skin, eyes, and other tissue on contact. It also expands into gas as it warms, which can displace oxygen in a poorly ventilated area. Do not try to produce, transfer, or apply it yourself. In a clinic, trained staff select an appropriate container, protect surrounding skin, and use a controlled technique for a specific lesion. After accidental contact, move away from the source and seek urgent medical advice, especially for eye exposure, breathing difficulty, confusion, extensive skin injury, or severe pain. Do not rub a frozen area or pull stuck material from the skin. A clinician should assess any blistering or tissue that remains numb.
