What should you know about prickly pear rash?

A rash that feels prickly after hot, humid conditions may fit Heat Rash, particularly when tiny bumps affect sweaty or covered areas. Similar symptoms can occur with Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm, Scabies, or a Drug Rash. A new medicine, personal-care product, close contact, or a ring-shaped scaly edge may change the likely explanation. A symptom does not identify its cause without examining the skin and hearing its history.

Keep the area cool, clean, and dry. Wear loose breathable clothing and change after sweating. Stop any newly introduced fragranced product, cosmetic, detergent, or topical medicine until a clinician or pharmacist advises otherwise. Do not scratch, scrub, or share towels. Photograph changes in good light and note possible triggers, including heat, foods, medicines, and contact with other people or animals. Avoid borrowing steroid or antifungal creams because the wrong treatment can alter the appearance and delay diagnosis.

Arrange a medical review if the rash spreads, persists, returns often, forms blisters or open sores, becomes painful, or develops pus, crust, or fever. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash after a medicine. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when several household members itch or when the rash affects the eyes or mouth.
