Prevention for polio

Polio is caused by a virus that can spread when contaminated material reaches the mouth. Some infected people have no clear symptoms, so vaccination protects the individual and helps reduce spread in the community. Immunisation is the main protection; hygiene supports it but does not replace scheduled doses.

Check that children have received the polio vaccines recommended in the UAE immunisation schedule, including any doses advised for travel. Keep records available and ask a clinician how to catch up if a dose was missed. Wash hands with soap after using the toilet, changing nappies, or caring for someone who is unwell, and before preparing food. Use safe drinking water and good sanitation. If travelling, arrange advice early because destination-specific vaccination may be needed.

Seek medical advice promptly after known contact with polio, during an outbreak, or if an unvaccinated person develops fever followed by marked weakness, muscle pain, or difficulty moving. Urgent help is needed for trouble breathing, swallowing, or sudden weakness. Call ahead if infection is possible so the clinic can advise on safe arrival.
