Can early puberty be prevented?

Early puberty means physical changes linked with puberty begin earlier than expected for a child's age and sex. Signs can include breast development, pubic or underarm hair, body odour, acne, rapid growth or vaginal bleeding. Timing varies between children. Sometimes the hormone signals begin early without a serious cause; less often, a brain, adrenal or ovarian condition needs investigation.

Arrange a paediatric assessment if changes appear unusually early, progress quickly or cause distress. Note when each change began, growth changes, headaches, vision symptoms, medication exposure and relevant family history. Do not use supplements or hormone products to delay puberty without specialist advice. A clinician may examine growth and development and request a female hormone blood panel or other tests when indicated. Reassurance, privacy and age-appropriate explanations can help a child feel supported.
